Sheldon H. Cohen Award for Outstanding Service to KNPS
Fred & Nancy Coombs • Holton, KS
Fred and Nancy Coombs of rural Jackson County have been KNPS members since 2005 and their enthusiasm for the organization is evident in everything they do. It would be my honor to nominate them for the Sheldon H. Cohen Award for Outstanding Service to KNPS.
Both Fred and Nancy are in their third 3-year term on the Board of Directors, with Nancy participating as our steadfast secretary and Fred chairing the Roadside Vegetation committee.
The Coombs co-lead the Atchison Membership region, which encompasses six counties in Northeastern Kansas. In just a few short years, they have organized several meetings and outings in the region, plus recruited a number of equally enthusiastic assistants throughout the region.
In recent years, you could also find the dynamic duo assisting in the KNPS booth at the Topeka Lawn & Garden Show and the Jefferson County Home, Lawn and Garden Show.
Fred and Nancy were instrumental in organizing the 2006 Annual Wildflower Weekend, plus they hosted the Fall Board meeting and an outing at their farm.
Outside of KNPS, they practice what they preach by working year-round to restore their 80-acre prairie to native grasses and forbs. The wooded areas on their farm are a haven for birds, butterfiles and other wildlife and the Coombs’s also host outings for the Topeka Audubon Society.
Anyone who has ever met Fred and Nancy know that they are genuine, welcoming and natural teachers always willing to spread the word about the organization.
