1994 Annual Meeting
Lawrence, Kansas on September 16-17, 1994
Friday, September 16
1:00pm Wildflower Forays in Douglas County - two forays are scheduled for the afternoon, rain or shine. Participants should assemble in the parking lot of the shopping center at the northeast corner of Iowa Street (US 59) and 23rd Street (KS 10) in southwest Lawrence (see enclosed map). A large parking area is available in front of the vacant grocery store northeast of the Hardee ‘5. From the parking lot, we will car-pool to the field. Plant lists will be available for both trips. Participants have their choice of two outings.
Trip 1. Clinton State Park - Mary Butterbrodt, office assistant and naturalist at Clinton State Park west of Lawrence, will lead a foray along hiking trails to a beautiful tallgrass prairie remnant. Mary has put together a list of more than 100 flowering plants known to occur in the prairies and woodlands in the park.
Trip 2. Breidenthal Biological Reserve - Craig Freeman will lead a trip to the University of Kansas Breidenthal Biological Reserve, located about 2 miles north of Baldwin City. Participants will have the opportunity to visit an outstanding oak-hickory forest remnant in which over 500 species of flowering plants have been identified.
4:30pm Forays return to Lawrence, Free time
6:30pm Dinner in the University of Kansas Natural History Museum Panorama Room
6:30pm Social period; museum and gift shop will be open
7:15pm Dinner (Reservations required)
8:00pm Drawings for prizes (includes 1-year family membership to the KU Natural History Museum, t-shirt, and books)
8:15pm Talk by Dr. Philip V. Humphrey, Director of the KU Natural History Museum; “The Great Global Biodiversity Supermarket”
9:00pm Depart museum
Saturday, September 17
The annual membership meeting and fall board meeting will be held in the Apollo Room on the first floor of the Space Technology Center, Raymond Nichols Hall, University of Kansas West Campus (see enclosed map).
8:30am Registration, Seed Exchange, Book Table - dues may be paid
9:00am Wildflower Slide Shows - several series of wildflower slides will be shown in the Apollo Room for those wishing to test their identification skills
9:30am Drawings for prizes (includes 1-year family membership to the KU Natural History Museum and books)
9:40am Annual Business Meeting - Ralph Brooks, presiding
10:30am “Pollination Biology of Sunflowers and their Relatives” - Talk by Dr. Meredith A. Lane, Associate Professor of Biology, University of Kansas and board member, Kansas Wildflower Society
11:00am Board of Directors Meeting - Apollo Room, Tour of the R.L. McGregor Herbarium (depending on interest)
