Akin Prairie Wildflower Walk led by Kelly Kindscher • Douglas County

Saturday, Jun 3rd, 2017 @ 7pm
Akin Conservation Easement • 1850 North 1150 Road • Lawrence, KS • Map

An annual favorite, the Akin Prairie Wildflower Walk takes place on Saturday, June 3, at 7 p.m. Kelly Kindscher, a KLT founder and author of Edible Wild Plants of the Prairie and Medicinal Plants of the Prairie, will lead the walk.

The Akin Prairie provides a splendid setting to identify prairie grasses and wildflowers and to learn about the cultural lore about individual plants. This 16-acre tract of native prairie, protected in perpetuity, memorializes Dorothy Akin and her love of prairie wildflowers. Dorothy’s surviving family donated the conservation easement to KLT in 1994. The Akin Prairie serves as an enduring testament to the generous individuals who made this protection possible.

The Wildflower Walk is free and open to the public. Families are encouraged to attend. KLT recommends that attendees wear hiking shoes, long pants, insect repellent, and sun protection. Please bring personal water containters for the walk.

Directions: The Akin Prairie is located at 1850 North 1150 Road. Please travel two miles east of Lawrence on K-10, take the East 1900 Rd (Douglas Co. 1057) exit and travel south two miles to North 1150 Road. Travel west on North 1150 about 0.4 miles. Signs will guide the way from K-10.
