Natural areas and historic sites of Douglas County - What do we have? What should be conserved?

Rural Douglas County has an amazing diversity of natural areas and historic sites. In these forums you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge about the prairies, forests and historic areas most important to you. Each forum will begin with short presentations about the natural and historic places near the host city. Then it will be your turn to talk about how to protect the places you love.

Why are we doing this? Residents responding to a 2014 Douglas County survey expressed overwhelming support for conservation of natural resources and creation of parks and open space, including walking paths and trails. As part of a project funded by the Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council, the Kansas Biological Survey is holding these forums to learn about your specific priorities for conservation and open spaces. By participating in these forums you will contribute to a vision for the conservation of prairies and forests in Douglas County, with a focus on those that occur at or near historic sites.

The forums will also include information for landowners. Staff from the Douglas County Conservation District; Kansas Land Trust; Grassland Heritage Foundation; Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism; will be on hand to answer questions about how private landowners can manage and protect their own natural areas.
