Purple Loosestrife Eradication Day • Douglas County
Saturday, Aug 13th, 2011 @ 8:30-11:30am
2900 Wildflower Dr. • Lawrence, KS • Map
On Aug. 13th GHF will host our 2nd Annual Purple Loosestrife Eradication Day when we will dig out invasive purple loosestrife plants from a Lawrence city park. The Kanza Southwind Nature Preserve has a small stand of the plants growing near the trail head at 2900 Wildflower Dr. and they need to go!
In the past, purple loosestrife was sold at area garden centers and nurseries as an ornamental plant. Unfortunately, it is a serious invader of wetland areas. It spreads easily and can overtake ponds, streams, and other wetlands if it becomes established. The Kansas Dept.of Ag. quarantined the plant in 2002 making it illegal to sell it in the state however, many plants still exist in public areas and private gardens.
We need your help! If you'd like to do your part to protect our wetlands and wet prairies, bring your shovels and gloves and help us get rid of this noxious weed. Wear sturdy shoes that can get wet (mud boots are great) and bring a bottle for water. We'll have extra water and other refreshments for everyone.
An RSVP is preferred. This is a rain or shine event. We hope to see everyone there!
