Old Military Trail Wildflower Walk • Jefferson County
Saturday, Apr 14th, 2012 @ 1pm
Casey's General Store • 150 Main Street • Ozawkie, KS • Map
Meet at the Casey's General Store in Ozawkie at 1pm. From there, we will carpool to the trail head of the Old Military Trail. The trail is rich with spring woodland wildflowers. Some flowers we hope to see are Dutchman's breeches and trout lilies. Depending on interest, there may be another walk in May to see the second wave of wildflowers. Contact Fred & Nancy if you plan to attend. This is the first Lake Perry outing of the Atchison Region of the KNPS.

For a few hours of fun with no more cost than showing up, consider a wildflower walk. More than a dozen people turned out for the Atchison Region of the Kansas Native Plant Society's Woodland Wildflower Walk around the Late Perry Old Military Trail site. They came from Kansas City, Lawrence, Perry, Valley Falls, Oskaloosa, Topeka, Soldier, Sabetha, and Holton to view and identify some of the vegetative species unique to the woods east of Lake Perry. Trout lilies and dutchman's breeches had finished flowering, since warm weather arrived early, but the spring flower parade continued. Two striking species, May apples and jack-in-the-pulpit, were blooming on the woodland floor. Some of the group offered their broad expertise in naming small plants, shrubs, and trees. Others appreciated the beauty of the woods and the diversity of species, took photos, enjoyed the convivial company, or just welcomed a hike in the Little Slough Creek Valley. One member generously offered homemade peanut butter cookies at the end of the gathering.
