Kaw Valley Seed Fair • Douglas County
Saturday, Feb 8th, 2014 @ 9am-3pm
Douglas County Fairgrounds, Building 21 • 2110 Harper St. • Lawrence, KS • Map
This is the 5th annual fair. The Seed Fair features a seed exchange, educational exhibits and a raffle for various gardening-related prizes. The annual fair, which has drawn 1,200 visitors the past two years, is expected to include more than 40 exhibitors offering educational information, gardening products and local farm products. The seed exchange will take place at a central set of tables where gardeners may drop off garden seeds they will not use, including seeds produced in their home gardens as well as purchased seeds. Heirloom, open-pollinated seeds are especially welcomed. This year, the exchange also will include books, videos, catalogs, and other gardening and seed-saving resources. Anyone may contribute seeds and other resources to the exchange, but no one is obligated to make a contribution in order to obtain seeds or other materials from the exchange table.
Food from The Merc, the locally owned natural foods grocer in Lawrence, will be available for purchase throughout the day, and tables will be set up near the kitchen.
The Kaw Valley Seeds Project is a nonprofit whose mission is to create a Local Living Seed Reserve by fostering a network of people committed to growing and eating, sharing and bartering seed varieties that are native to or thrive in the Kansas River Valley. In addition, the projectís goal is to educate the general public on the pleasures of growing their own food by teaching them how to save, store and plant seeds from their own gardens, and where to obtain organic and local seed lines.
