Annual Wildflower Weekend > 1996

1996 Annual Meeting

Lawrence, Kansas on September 6-7, 1996

Friday, September 6

1:00pm  Wildflower Forays in Douglas County - two forays are scheduled for the afternoon, rain or shine. Participants should assemble in the parking lot of the shopping center at the northeast corner of Iowa Street (US 59) and 23rd Street (KS 10) in southwest Lawrence (see enclosed map). A large parking area is available near the Hardees restaurant and Rusty’s Sports store. From the parking lot we will car pool to the field. Plant lists will be available for both trips. Participants will have their choice of the two outings.

Trip 1. Bryophytes (and a flowering plant or two) of the Breidenthal Biological Reserve - Ever wonder what those little green lumps were that you stepped on as you wandered through the forest looking for morels? Here is your chance to find out. Get a quick introduction to some of the mosses and liverworts of eastern Kansas with Stephen Timme, who will lead a trip to the University of Kansas Breidenthal Biological Reserve, located about 2 miles north of Baldwin City. In this excellent oak-hickory forest remnant, participants will learn to recognize some of the more than 100 kinds of bryophytes (and over 500 kinds of flowering plants) found growing there.

Trip 2. Kill Creek Prairie - In western Johnson County, Johnson County Park and Recreation Dept. has purchased a large tract of land along Kill Creek. Eventually, this tract will be at the heart of a larger recreational area proposed by the department. It contains a roughly 30-acre remnant of virgin tallgrass prairie, and the adjacent oak-hickory forest supports a diversity of upland and floodplain plants. Craig Freeman will lead a foray to this beautiful site. Kill Creek Prairie has not been inventoried thoroughly, so there are bound to be a few surprises in the prairie and forest.

4:30pm Forays return to Lawrence; Free time

7:00pm Choice of two workshops

Wildflower Greeting Card Workshop - Bob Mabes will conduct a 2 ½ hour workshop on making wildflower greeting cards. This event will be held in the R.L. McGregor Herbarium, Bridwell Laboratory, University of Kansas West Campus. Reservations must be made in advance (see enclosed form). A $5 fee covers the cost of all materials and is payable at the workshop. Participation is limited to 25 people. If you have questions about this workshop, call Bob Mabes at 913/642-5604.

Dried-flower Wreath Workshop - Carol Kuhn will conduct a workshop on making dried-flower wreaths. This event will be held in her home at 3406 Lazy Brook Lane in southwest Lawrence. To find Carol, take Iowa St south (from KU) to the 23rd St./Clinton Parkway intersection and go west (right) onto Clinton Parkway. At the intersection of Clinton Parkway and Kasold, turn south (left) and drive until you get to 25th St. You will turn west (right) onto 25th St and then turn north (right) onto Lazy Brook Lane which is sort of a crazy street. Sorry Carol! The cream and teal colored home is in a cul-de-sac on the right-hand side of the road. Reservations must be made in advance. There is no charge for this workshop, but if you have any dried plants that you wish to incorporate into your wreath or to share with others, please bring them along. Participation is limited to 8 people (if you send in a reservation for this workshop, we will contact you to let you know if you are one of the participants). If you have questions about this workshop call Carol Kuhn at 913/749-7442.
