Clear Shrub Honeysuckle at Hidden Valley Camp January through April • Douglas County

Thursday, Feb 7th, 2019 to Friday, Apr 19th, 2019 @ 1-4pm
Hidden Valley Camp • 3420 Bob Billings Pkwy • Lawrence, KS • Map

Join The Honeysuckle Warriors in taking out the extremely invasive shrub honeysuckle that has filled the entire understory of our woods and out competes all other natives. This all-volunteer crew has been working at Hidden Valley Camp for 5 years, making great progress, but we still have about 30 more acres to go!
We work once per week, always on weekday afternoons, January through April, weather permitting. Volunteers must sign up via email to receive a weekly notice explaining the day of week (based on weather forecasts), time period (usually about 1-4 pm), where we will be working and where to park. Signing up does not commit you...just come when you can and stay however long you can.
Work involves using hand tools to cut new brush, hauling the shrub to staging points, and burning the biomass all afternoon to make biochar. This valuable resource is later used throughout the camp in a variety of environmentally beneficial projects. Other projects may include pulling fresh honeysuckle starts or other invasive plants, like garlic mustard, cutting fire wood, stocking and straightening up woodpiles, making water bars on the hillsides to slow run-off and erosion, or picking up litter.
Hand tools provided, although you are welcome to bring your own loppers, handsaw, or chainsaw. All volunteers must sign a waiver. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants and sleeves, work gloves and dress in layers...we always get hot! Email Durand for more information or to get on the list.
